The Nest x Yale Lock is a smart deadbolt that you can connect to WiFi and control remotely using the Nest app. However, the lock doesn't connect directly to WiFi, but instead uses a different kind of network to communicate with a Nest Guard or Nest Connect in your home, which in turn connect to WiFi.
Nest Guard is the base with keypad and siren that is part of the Nest Secure system.
Nest Connect is a range extender that keeps your Nest Secure devices connected when they're far apart or helps connect the Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi.
If you purchase the Nest x Yale Lock from one of the Nest retail partners, the Nest Connect will be included in the box. If you purchase it from the Nest store, you have the option to buy it with or without a Nest Connect. If you already have Nest Secure, you only need to purchase Nest Connect if your lock is too far from the Nest Guard.
2. Add Device to App
You won't be able to connect your lock to the app without a Nest Connect or Nest Guard already set up.
Open the Nest app.
Tap the Add button to begin adding a Nest device to the app.
Scan your Nest device's QR code.
If you're having troubles, tap Continue without scanning and enter the code manually.
When prompted, pick a location that best fits.
The app will scan for other Nest products to connect to. Note that your lock will need to find another product like the Connect or Guard in order to work.
When the app has found one, press and hold the button on your lock to connect them.
Once the lock has been connected to the app, place the battery cover on the lock.
Create a unique passcode. You can create passcodes for other users, invite others to share access, or set schedules for guests.
Congratulations! Your Nest device has been added to the Nest app and is ready to use.
