Mega allows you to share your files easily between all your devices, as well as access them from anywhere in the world on any other computer you can access.
This guide will walk you through setting up the Mega client software on your devices, to make it easier to get to your files from everywhere.
2. Create Account
First, you will need an account with Mega to use their services.
Open your preferred browser.
In the Address Bar at the top, type in mega.nz and press return or enter.
Select Create an account.
Follow the instructions on screen to sign up for a Mega account. Mega is a third-party provider of services, with both free and paid-for services. During setup you will be given choices and options that may change depending on Mega. Read and follow the instructions to complete the setup.
Be sure to make special note of the username and password you've setup for Mega, you will need your username and password every time you wish to access your files remotely.
Once setup, you will be shown your Mega account page.
3. Type
For our next step, we need to determine what kind of device you are using.
4. OS Choice
To continue, we need to know what Operating System your computer is using.
There are 2 main Operating Systems for personal computers currently available, Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS.
Microsoft WindowsApple macOSMicrosoft Windows runs on computers produced by multiple companies, such as Lenovo, Asus, Dell, Toshiba, Hewlett Packard, Acer, and Sony.Apple is the only company that makes macOS computers.
5. Setup Client
Open your preferred browser.
In the Address Bar at the top, type in mega.nz/sync and press return or enter.
Select Download to download the MegaSync client.
Depending on which browser you are using, you may be asked what to do with the download. Select Run, or open the file once it has finished downloading.
Windows will ask for permission to run the installer, select Yes.
Select your language, then select OK to continue.
A welcome screen will appear, select Next.
Carefully read the License Agreement. Once you have read the terms, select I Agree to continue.
You will be asked whom you want to install MegaSync for. If you are the only person who uses your computer, select Install just for me. If multiple people log in separately to this computer and you want them all to be able to use their own MegaSync accounts, select Install for anyone using this computer. Then select Next.
You will be asked where you want the MegaSync icons. The default location is fine, select Install.
Installation is complete. Select Finish.
MegaSync will open, to get your user information. We just setup an account on their website. Select Login.
Enter your Mega email address and password; the ones you just created, then select Next.
Select Full sync so all your files will be in sync, then select Next.
MegaSync will create a special folder for files to sync to. The default is an excellent choice. Select Next.
Setup is now complete, select Finish.
You can check the status of MegaSync from your System Tray. You may have to click the arrow to show hidden icons.
Here you will see the status of MegaSync, if it's copying files for example. Select Mega at the bottom-left.
You will be shown the Mega folder on your computer. You can copy files here, and they will automatically sync with your Mega account, and be available instantly on the web or other computers with Mega.
6. Web Access
Once you have the Mega client setup on your home computer, any files you place into the Mega folder will be accessible from any other computer with an Internet connection, using the web browser.
Open your preferred browser.
In the Address Bar at the top, type in mega.nz and press return or enter.
Select Login in the top right corner.
Log in with your Mega account information, then select Log in.
You will be shown your Mega account page. You can access your files from here from any computer.
If you are on a public device accessed by multiple people, it's best to log out once you are done. Select the Menu icon in the top-right of the page.
Select Logout to log out of your account.
7. Setup Client
Open your preferred browser.
In the Address Bar at the top, type in mega.nz/sync and press return or enter.
Select Download to download the MegaSync client.
Open the file you downloaded from your browser.
Drag the MegaSync program into the Application shortcut.
MegaSync will install.
Open Applications (you can double-click the shortcut in the MegaSync installer), and select MegaSync.
macOS will ask if you want to open MegaSync the first time, select Open.
You will be asked for your Mac password. Enter your Mac username and password, then select OK.
You'll be asked to setup. You have already created an account, select Login.
Enter your MegaSync Email address and password, the ones you just created, then select Next.
Select Full sync to ensure every file is synced properly, then select Next.
MegaSync will create a special folder to copy information back and forth to your computer in. The default location is a perfect choice. Select Next.
Setup is now complete, select Finish.
MegaSync can be accessed by the Circle with M icon near your clock. Select this icon to see the status of MegaSync, if any files are being uploaded or downloaded. Select the Mega button in the bottom left to show your MegaSync folder.
This will show the folder on your computer. Copy files into this folder as you normally do, and they will be synced with your MegaSync account, allowing access from the website, as well as any other computer with MegaSync installed.
8. OS Choice
To continue, we need to know what Operating System your smartphone or tablet has.
There are 2 main Operating Systems for smartphones currently available, Android and iOS.
Android SmartphoneiOS SmartphoneAndroid smartphones are produced by multiple companies, such as Samsung, LG, Motorola, HTC, and OnePlus.Apple is the only company that makes iOS smartphones.
9. Setup Client
Install Mega Client
Open the App Store.
Select Search in the bottom right corner.
Type in Mega, and select Mega from the list.
Select Get for Mega.
Configure Mega Client
Open Mega.
Enter your email address and the password you used to create your Mega account, then select Login.
Mega asks for permission to use your camera, to take photos directly to your Mega account as well as back up your photos for you. Select OK.
Mega asks for permission to use your Microphone, to provide voice chat over their service as well as record voice memos to your Mega account. Select OK.
Mega asks for permission to send you notifications, to let you know when files have been changed or uploaded to your Mega account. Select Allow.
Mega will offer to automatically configure it to backup your photos and videos from your smartphone. You can turn on video uploads if you wish, then Enable the camera backups.
Mega will request permissions to your existing photos to back them up. Select OK.
Use Mega Client
Open Mega.
You'll be shown the files on your drive here.
Along the bottom are further options for the program.
Cloud drive - Returns you to your Mega Cloud drive main view.
Camera uploads - A special folder created to store pictures you take with your phone.
Chat - Allows you to chat with your contacts on Mega.
Shared folders - Folders shared with you by other people on Mega.
Preferences - Adjust settings.
10. Setup Client
Install Mega Client
Launch the Play Store on your smartphone.
Select the search bar at the top.
Type in mega, then select Mega from the list.
Select Install.
Configure Mega Client
Open Mega.
You will be asked if you already have an account, or wish to create one. We just created one that we will be using. Select Login.
Enter the email address and password you created earlier, then select Login.
Mega will request permission to add files to your device. Select Allow.
You'll be given an offer to purchase increased storage. Select Cancel.
Mega will ask what content you'd like to automatically backup from your phone, and how to transfer files. Make your choices, then select OK.
Upload Videos - Any videos you take with your phone will be saved to your Mega account.
Use cellular connection - Mega will use your cellular connection to upload files, using your cellular data plan.
Mega will request permission to use your camera. Select Allow.
Use Mega Client
Open Mega.
You'll be shown the files on your drive here.
From the Menu on the top-left, you can access additional areas.
Cloud drive - Returns you to your Mega Cloud drive main view.
Saved for Offline - Files you have copied to your phone, so you can access them if your phone goes offline. Mega syncs these files automatically whenever it is online.
Camera uploads - A special folder created to store pictures you take with your phone.
Shared folders - Folders shared with you by other people on Mega.
Contacts - Allows you to share files and folders on your Mega drive with people on your contacts list.
Chat - Allows you to chat with your contacts on Mega.
