How to Stream from a Surface Pro to Another Device
Authored by: Support.com Tech Pro Team
1. Introduction
Microsoft Surface can stream videos to wireless display devices. To stream to wireless displays, the tablet uses technology is called Miracast which can broadly be described as "HDMI over Wi-Fi". This feature is used to expand the display, or simply connect to a bigger display device for entertainment. The Surface can also stream to digital media players that may be connected to a TV or any display with an HDMI port.
Casting videos in Windows 10 typically requires that both the video source and receiver are connected to the same Wi-Fi.
2. Connect to Wireless Display
Open the Action Center.
Click on Project.
Next, Select Connect to a wireless display.
If the Connect to a wireless display option is not listed, this means your device or video card does not support Miracast.
A scan for wireless display devices will start. Select your desired wireless display device.
Once connected, your Windows 10 device should now be mirrored by the wireless display.
3. Casting from Apps to Digital Media Player
You can stream video from apps to your favorite digital media player (Chromecast, AppleTV, Roku, etc).
Examples of streaming apps include:
Google Play Movies & TV
HBO Go
Netflix
Sling TV
Twitch
Vevo
YouTube
etc.
To cast from your device to a digital media player, both devices typically need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Also the digital media player should already be set up and should be within range.
Open the app you wish to stream from and find a video to play.
Locate and click the cast icon.
A list of detected media players will be shown. Select the one you wish to cast to.
Your video will now play.
