How to Test Out Skype Audio and Video Settings

1. Introduction

When the sound or video in Skype isn't working right, it can be frustrating to figure out the root cause. You may be surprised to know that Skype includes a default contact in your contact list for a bot called the Echo / Sound Test Service.

Fortunately, if you are having issues, the troubleshooting process isn't too difficult when using this handy audio and video testing tool, and a little process of elimination.

This guide will walk you through all the necessary steps in order to make sure your sound is working properly before joining a meeting. It'll show how to test your webcam, microphone, headset or speaker sound in an Echo test call, and what to do if you can't hear the Echo call's voice or your recorded message. Finally, it'll reveal what to do if you are still having sound issues.

2. How to Make a Echo / Test Call

Make a test call in Skype to check and make sure your microphone and sound are working correctly. It's as simple as calling the "Echo / Sound Test Service" listed in your contacts, and then follow the prompts.

  1. In Skype, search for the "Echo / Sound Test Service" contact.

  1. Click the Echo / Sound Test Service contact. Be sure to click the contact listed under People, and not one of the fake contacts from within the Skype directory.

  1. To start the call, select the audio button.

  1. The Echo assistant will answer and guide you through the process of testing your microphone and sound. You'll be asked to speak into your microphone as it records your voice, then shortly afterwards it'll play the audio back to you. Follow the prompts.

  1. If you can hear the Echo assistant speak, then your sound is fine. If you hear your recorded message then your microphone is fine.
  2. If you don't hear any sound, you can check to make sure your speakers are on, are turned up, and not muted. You can also try playing music or audio in another application to make sure your system's sound is okay.
  3. If your voice wasn't recorded, then you should check to make sure it is plugged in and not muted. If it is a Bluetooth headset, you should certify that it is charged up and connected as well.
  4. You can also take this opportunity to ensure your webcam's video is working as well. Select the video button to turn your webcam on. If you wish to test another camera device, select one from within the camera drop-down menu. If your webcam isn't listed, then it may not be connected or turned on.

  1. If you don't see any video, make sure the camera is plugged in, is on, and pointed towards you. Some webcams have little blinds or screens that could be obstructing the camera. If it is a built-in camera, then the only thing you should need to do is make sure nothing is blocking it.
  2. If you can hear the recorded message, then your sound and mic are working great. Once you are satisfied with the test call results, hang up.

3. If the Echo Test Call Worked but You're Having Issues

If you are having some type of call issue and the Echo test call worked fine, there are some additional checks you can make.

  1. Check the Skype Service Status page. On the status page you can check to see if there are any outages or service interruptions occurring. If there is an issue, simply wait for service to return or contact Skype's customer service.
