How to Update a Microsoft Surface Pro Tablet

1. Introduction

Updating your operating system software is essential; not only will it bring new features but it will fix vulnerabilities and bugs detected by Microsoft.

Installing updates should improve the security and overall performance of your device.

• Make sure your device is plugged into a power outlet before installing updates or is charged to at least 40 percent before installing the update.
• Do not power off your device while it's updating.
• If you are connected via mobile broadband, windows updates may not download over the metered connection. It's recommended to install the update using a Wi-Fi connection.

2. Windows 8.1

To setup your device to install updates automatically:

1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen and select Settings.
   (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and choose Settings.)
2. Select Change PC settings.

2. Select Update and recovery.
3. Select Windows Update.
   

1. Click Choose how updates get installed.
   

1. Select Install update automatically (recommended).
2. Click Apply and close the window.

3. Manual Update

3. Check Select all important updates and then select Install.

2. You may be prompted to reboot once updates are complete.

To Configure Automatic Updates:

1. Click the Start button.
2. Type Windows Update Settings and press Enter.
   As soon as you start typing the start menu will turn into a search window.

2. Select Advanced options.
   

1. Select Automatic (recommended) and close the window to save the setting.
   

5. Manual Update (Windows 10)

Windows 10 is configured to automatically check for updates regularly for your computer.
If you are using a laptop or tablet, make sure you plug it in to charge while updates run.

1. Open the Start menu, and select Settings.
   

1. Select Update & Security.
   

1. Select Windows Update on the left, then Check for updates on the right.
   

1. Once the system has finished checking for updates, it will automatically download and install the latest applicable updates.Some Windows Updates can't be made with the system running. Instead, Windows will ask to reboot to complete these updates.
   If prompted simply select Reboot to complete the update process.
