How to Use a LeapFrog LeapPad Ultimate

1. Introduction

The LeapFrog LeapPad Ultimate is a kid-tough and kid-safe tablet designed entirely for kids that includes preloaded content to help kids develop skills in mathematics, reading and science as well as music, puzzles, logic and creativity to prepare kids for preschool and beyond. This guide will show you how to use different common features of your LeapPad Ultimate so you can get things configured in a way that works best for your family.

2. Install an App

  1. At the bottom of the LeapPad Welcome screen, tap the icon of parents with a child.

  1. You will be prompted to enter your 4 digit Parent Lock code to access Parent Mode. Enter your code.
  2. This will bring you to the Parent Controls menu.
  3. Tap on Manage Apps.

  1. Expand the Not Installed drop down, then tap Download next to the app you wish to download.
  2. The app should quickly appear under the Downloads tab along with an indicator showing the download progress, and then move to the Installed tab once installed.

3. Uninstall an App

  1. At the bottom of the LeapPad Welcome screen, tap the icon of parents with a child.

  1. You will be prompted to enter your 4 digit Parent Lock code to access Parent Mode. Enter your code.
  2. This will bring you to the Parent Settings menu.
  3. Tap on Manage Apps.

  1. On the Manage Content screen, expand the Installed menu, scroll down and locate some of the larger sized apps (App size is displayed beneath the app name).
  2. Tap the trash can to delete the app.

Pre-installed system apps cannot be deleted.

4. LeapSearch

LeapSearch is a built-in web search engine for the LeapPad Ultimate that includes over 1,000 hand-selected fun and engaging pieces of content including videos, images, games and web pages, that are 100% kid-appropriate. Every content experience your child will encounter with LeapPad has been approved by LeapFrog’s team of learning experts, so parents don’t have to set filters or search amongst a sea of content and guess what is appropriate.

5. Time Controls

LeapPad Time Control options allow parents to control the maximum time the LeapPad can be played each day. This feature is off by default.

Enable Time Controls

  1. On the Welcome screen, tap the clock icon.

  2. A Set Play Time box will open on the screen.

  1. The Set Play Time box has three slider bar controls:
  2. On/Off - Enable/Disable Time Control.
  3. You can play for this long - Amount of time that you can play.
  4. Then you need to rest for - The amount of time that must pass before you can play again.
  5. Tap Set when done.
  6. A counter with the amount of time remaining will show on the top of the screen.

Time controls run cumulatively. For example, using the play time settings above: If the child plays for 1 hour, then turns the LeapPad off for 1 hour, then begins using it again; when powered back on, they would have 1:15 of play time remaining followed by 3 hours of required rest time. Anytime the LeapPad has been powered off for a cumulative period of 4 hours, the available play time will reset to 2:15.

Rest Time

  1. When your child has used up all their time, the device will enter a cooldown period called Rest Time.
  2. To use parental options while the LeapPad is on Rest Time, tap the blue parent/child icon.

  1. When prompted, enter your four-digit parent lock code.
  2. From here you may Turn off Time Controls, Add 30 minutes, or Open Time Controls to change settings.

6. Restrict Access to App Center

There are three levels of access control for the App Center on the LeapPad.

To adjust settings:

  1. Power on the LeapPad.
  2. At the bottom of the "Welcome" screen, tap the icon of parents and child.

  2. This will bring you to the Parent Settings menu.
  3. Tap the Child Profiles icon.

  1. Under your child's name, tap on Edit.

  1. Tap on Permissions at the bottom of the next screen.

  1. Under "LeapFrog App Center", you'll see three levels of restrictions on the App Center.

  1. The first and most restrictive setting will require the 4 digit Parent Lock code to be entered in order to open the App Center on the LeapPad. Check the box to activate this setting.
  2. The second box will disable the wish list buttons when it is unchecked.
  3. The third box will suppress pricing and the buy buttons when unchecked.
